Abandoned Mines Being Sealed Here
Has Provided Work For Many Men In Valley District
A. J. Clawson Is Foreman

Mine sealing operations have been in progress for several weeks at various abandoned mines in Ligonier township, with a large group of township men finding employment on the projects. A. J. Clawson is in charge of the projects and Verne Griffith is the time keeper.

The mines are being sealed under the plan approved by the CWA and when finished will result in the reclaiming of Loyalhanna Creek for fish life. All told, over three hundred men are working in Westmoreland County on the Loyalhanna project.

W. J. Schuster, with offices in the Lowenstein Building, Latrobe, is in charge of the work. Owners of abandoned mines may have the entrances sealed without cost to themselves by communicating with Mr. Schuster.

Concrete barriers are placed, which prevent entrance of air into the mines (the condition which causes the acidity, due to the chemical properties of the oxygen) but at the same time allows the water to drain out.

Freeing the stream unreadable is primarily a public unreadable but it also makes the water habitable to fish life, another important advantage.

While necessary to the successful completion of the work, filling of the cave-ins has an added and distinctive value in removing hazards especially dangerous to children or hunters who might fall into the holes.
