Richard K. Mellon, heir to the millions of the late R. B. Mellon, brother of the former Secretary of the Treasury, believes he has passed his first examination in railroads. Mellon appeared before the Interstate Commerce Commission seeking his fathers place as a director of the Pennsylvania Railroad.
The examination attorney for the commission asked Mellon:
What do you know of the Ligonier Valley Railroad of which you say you are a director?
Something, snapped back the 34-year-old Mellon. This Ligonier Valley Company is a family railroad. That is where we have put our relatives for the last 50 years.
Spectators snickered. Undaunted, the attorney put another question:
Just what does this road serve?
Its a very small road, flashed Mellon. I think there is a coal mine or two at one end and an amusement park about the middle.
The attorney dropped that line of questioning.
