New Bridge Is Promised Latrobe

Assurance of a new bridge across the Loyalhanna on North Ligonier street were announced at the regular meeting of the borough council last evening. Bids for the building of the new bridge will be sought via advertisement within the near future, with work to begin as soon as the contract has been let, Councilman Scally, of the street committee, reported. Members of the committee conferred recently with the county commissioners and were told that the above schedule would be followed out, relative to the bridge work. The bridge is to have a 30 foot roadway with 6 foot walks on the side.

The Ligonier Valley Railroad Company is planning to make a request in writing within the near future that the borough give the railroad a foot of ground along the west side of their right of way, sufficient to build a 12 inch concrete wall, it was reported. The proposed wall would extend for a considerable distance, with the purpose being to abolish an encroachment of the railroad bank on borough property would be recovered should the wall be built, as the encroachment amounts to about 3 feet.

The L. V. R. R. notified the street committee that the railroad would be willing to furnish $1,ooo of the sum necessary to build a contemplated subway under the L. V. R.R. tracks at James street for the safety of school children. They favor walls with a concrete cover, in place of the large pipe, previously suggested. The cost of the entire project was estimated at $3,500. This matter will be considered at a future meeting of council.

Councilman Scally, taking exception to an editorial in the Bulletin, declared that the borough was not acting in an arbitrary manner with regard to the cutting down of shade trees, in making borough improvements. The chopping down of the trees on Unity street couldnt be avoided, he declared. One of the trees, he said, was bad, while in the case of two others, he maintained that the property owner in front of whose home they were located, was agreeable that they should come down. The editor of the Bulletin, Mr. Scally declared, was influenced by a lot of women. I could pay with a one dollar bill for all the damage done through mistakes by borough authorities, he declared.

Another of councilman Scallys entertaining references to the editor of the Bulletin was to the effect that he, the councilman, would hate to be St. Peter, when it came time for the editor to appear at the heavenly gates his in inference being that he would consign the editor to the place where there arent any trees.

The police were given authority to have their motorcycle repaired.

Several ordinances calling for the laying of concrete curb and water table came up, and under a suspension of the rules, were given a final reading, without the usual time for advertising being allowed. The reason for this was that as none of the projects were of a large size, after the consent of the interested property owners had been obtained, the work was gone ahead with and completed before the ordinances had been passed. This was because the concrete mixer and material were near the scene at the time, and labor was saved by going ahead at once.

The ordinances passed were for concrete curb and water table on the following streets: west side of Anderson street from Wagner to Grant street; west side of Watkins avenue from Avenue A to Avenue B; on Avenue A from Laveen street to an alley west of Watkins avenue.
An ordinance to annex a strip of land on the south side, from the Latrobe Electric Steel Company, so as to bring the borough incinerator plant within the borough limits, was also brought up, and passed with a suspension of rules.
The Ligonier Valley Railroad Company has promised to repair the crossings within the borough limits within the near future. New ties are to be placed between the rails at about 8 inch intervals, and filled in with amiesite.
