John D. Seger, 70 years old, died at his home, West Main street, at 4:15 o'clock Thursday evening. He is survived by one daughter, Mrs. Mayme Voegel of Ligonier and two brothers. Walter J. Seger and Peter J. Seger, both of Derry township.
Mr. Seger was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. David Seger, who came from Germany and located in Armstrong county. Later they came to Ligonier valley and located on a tract of land above Rector. For a number of years Mr. Seger and his brother, Samuel A., were engaged in the lumber business and, later they entered the coal mining business organizing in 1903 the Seger Coal & Coke company. Later this company became the Old Colony Coal & Coke company. At the same time the brothers were partners in the mercantile business and had their store and offices located near the passenger station.
When Samuel A. Seger died about 15 years ago, John D. Seger continued the business under the name of Seger Brothers. After mining and shipping coal from the Old Colony mines a number of years, the brothers bought a large tract of coal land in Derry township and continued mining and shipping coal.
Mr. Seger amassed quite a fortune in the lumber and mining business and erected one
of the finest homes in Ligonier. He was a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. Funeral services were held from the family home on West Main street Sunday afternoon. Interment was made in the Ligonier Valley cemetery.
