Machine Slid 60 Feet Before Hitting L. V. R. R. Engine
Local Driver Had Narrow Escape

Although the driver turned into a ditch at the side of the tracks, when he saw that he would be unable to get across the Weldon street crossing of the Ligonier Valley Railroad before the arrival of an approaching train, the pilot of the engine smashed into the rear end of an automobile being driven by Joseph Quinn, of Latrobe, about 1:23 oclock, yesterday afternoon.

Mr. Quinn experienced a few thrilling moments and a severe jolting up but escaped injury. The right rear fender of the automobile was twisted and bent, and the rear axle of the car was broken. The step on the engine cab was bent, as was a brace which holds a coupling lifter on the front of the engine.

Mr. Quinn is said to have been driving his Nash roadster east on Weldon street at a rapid rate of speed.

A truck ahead of him stopped at the crossing to allow the train to pass, but Quinn was going too fast to stop on such short notice. His car sped past the parked truck and was about to go across the tracks, when the driver realized that he could not get over ahead of the engine.

He swerved the steering wheel sharply to the left and the car went into a ditch alongside the tracks. The rear end of the machine was not far enough from the tracks to prevent a collision and the pilot of the engine smashed into the rear fender. Marks left by the wheels showed that the car had slid for 61 feet before being hit.
