New Bridge to be Long One

The new long bridge at McCance will be about three times longer than the present structure when completed some time this year. The new concrete, steel-rod, reinforced structure will be about a quarter of a mile long and will cross the Loyalhanna and the track of the Ligonier Valley Railroad Company. The eastern end of the bridge is being constructed at a point on the Lincoln Highway just west of the schoolhouse and the western abutment is located just a short distance south of the present bridge. The present location of the new bridge under construction will enable a railroad track to be extended southeast along the Loyalhanna so that in the future when the Donegal-Cook township coal field is developed the company will have an outlet for shipping coal.

The work on the $185,000 contract was started last fall when the contractor had the foundations laid for the concrete pillars. Early this year work was resumed and several car loads of lumber for forms and heavy steel rods were placed for the workmen. At present several of the piers are about completed and the forms are set and the network of steel rods is being placed for the concrete. When the new bridge is completed travelers on the Lincoln Highway will cross directly over the railroad tracks.
