Deepest Gas Will Struck At Ligonier
After drilling the worlds deepest well through 7, 430 feet of the earths crust the Peoples Natural Gas company las week struck gas in Booth & Flinn Well No. 2, along the Lincoln highway, 3 miles west of Ligonier, Pa.
The gas came after thirty-one months day and night drilling that resulted in the expenditure of $150,000. The flow is estimated at 290,000 feet daily and the rock pressure at 3,700 pounds per square inch.
Drilling to such depths for natural gas was prompted by the efforts of the company to find new supplies of fuel for its consumers, according to John B. Tonkin, vice president and general manager.
All the known gas bearing sands in Pennsylvania and West Virginia have been in the process of draining for the last 35 years or more, he explained, and our company felt that if new supplies are to be found they will be at greater depths.
This well is the third deep test we have made in the same locality. The first reached 6,800 feet before gas came. It gave off 450,000 cubic feet a day for a while but now after four years it has settled down to about 150,000 cubic feet per day. Another well on the Seger farm nearby has been abandoned after four years steady drilling.
The deep well justified our belief that gas lies at greater depths, and although the production is not large our investment, we feel, have been warranted.
