Stolen Mail Sack Was Found Monday
The Sack Contained About $9,000 Besides Letters And Papers
The mail sack which was stolen from the platform of the railroad station at Latrobe the evening of August 2, 1920, and which contained approximately $9,000 besides a number of valuable letters and papers, was found in a field back of the brickyard near Latrobe where it had evidently lain since the night it was stolen about five weeks ago. It was found by two Mechesneytown boys named Braden and Peterson who were walking across the field toward the street car line. Chief of Police Stahl was notified and he went to where the pouch was at once. The grass was dead under where the mail pouch had lain while grass had grown high around it.
A number of packages of letters were found scattered around, and they were in good state of preservation considering they had lain exposed to the weather. Most of the mail was still in the pouch and in good condition. A slit in the leather near the top of the pouch large enough to admit a man's hand was made by a penknife found near by. This showed how the money in the mail pouch was stolen. The money is what the thief was
after as nothing else was taken. The package of money was bulky as it was in $100 bills and less. The post office inspectors were notified and are again at work on the case.
Only a few of the letters on top of the package thrown out of the sack were found to be illegible as to their addresses. These as far as possible were obtained at the Latrobe post office by opening the letters and they were sent to their destination.
A clue to the thief may possibly be secured. Somebody knowing what he was after is evidently the guilty party.
