Another Well To Be Drilled At Ligonier
On Ground Pledged by General for Funds to Help Finance Revolution

The Peoples Natural Gas company, it is said, is making preparations to drill a second well in Chestnut Ridge, near Ligonier. They have already placed on record leases on twelve different tracts of land and a pipeline is being laid into the new filed to carry the gas to market.

Attorneys tracing title to those lands for the gas companies find an interesting bit of history in connection with these ridge leans considered of little value until within recent years. This tract which centers around the big well at McCance was part of a 6,000 acre tract which General Arthur St. Clair, the great Westmoreland county Revolutionary hero, pledged to Robert Morris, the Philadelphia banker for bunds to win the Revolutionary war.Twelve thousand dollars were secured on these lands to finance the struggle which brought about the birth of this nation, but is cost the Westmoreland county patriot his fortune.

Now 140 years later these old St. Clair land holdings are about to reveal the wealth hidden in the hills. General St. Clair died without ever being reimbursed for his sacrifices.
