Railroad Sold At Public Sale
P. W. & S. Line Purchased By Syndicate For $15,000
Somerset, Pa., Sept. 16. The Pittsburg, Westmoreland and Somerset railroad was sold at a public sale held at the court house here, by a representative of the bondholders committee for $15,000. The railroad was purchased by a syndicate of Pittsburgh men. The sale includes all property of the railroad corporation.
The largest tract of land, in one place, which goes with the sale is a tract a short distance north of here, which was formerly occupied by the company as a terminal and on which had been erected a freight station and passenger station, and other buildings, before the trains ran between Somerset and Ligonier.
The line, constructed and originally owned by the lumber firm of Byers, Allen & Co., was meant to carry timber from the Laurel Hill to Ligonier. When the timber was all removed the line was extended to Somerset and operated as a passenger and freight line.
This road shortened the distance from Somerset via Ligonier to Pittsburgh 40 miles.
