Cars Got Away on Branch

A runaway occurred on the Wilpen branch of the L. V. R. R., last evening, which might have been disastrous had it not been noticed in time.

The open top cars which were being loaded with coal at the Wilpen tipple were dropped down the track as they were loaded and after about five cars had been placed the brakes refused to hold on the slight grade below the tipple and the cars started.

The Ligonier passenger train was going up the track below the switch at the same time.

A passerby noticed the cars moving and flagged the passenger train in time for it to back safely onto a side track.

The runaway cars passed the switch safely and then left the rails some distance below, throwing two of the off their trucks and derailing the other three.

A defect in the brakes is said to have been the cause of the runaway.
