Crossing Blocked On Coldest Day Of the Year
A Liggie train had to select the coldest morning of the year, upon which to block the Fairmont Street crossing, and for twenty-five minutes this morning, a number of school children stood upon the other side of the train, awaiting an opportunity to get across the track.
Meantime, the mercury registered below zero.
The train, made up of 65 cars, proved too big for the engine, upon so cold a day, and at 8:25 the long string of cars came to a halt, blocking the crossing. The engine puffed and snorted, but it couldnt move the train, and for some reason or other, the train was not broken at the crossing.
Meantime, from 30 to 40 children gathered at the crossing, on their way to school.
Some of them, after waiting for a time, walked back to Spring Street, where the crossing was open, but others waited, and in several instances it is said they became so cold they had to go home instead of to school.
The crossing, it is said, remained blocked, until 8:50.
Several indignant parents called up the burgess, and reported the occurrence, and the burgess directed Chief Stahl to investigate the case, also to make information against the members of the train crew, in the event that the facts justified such action.
Up until noon no action had been taken. The question appeared to be as to whether or not the crew was up against weather conditions rendering the members helpless to clear the crossing or whether they were negligent in not having broken the train, for the convenience of the public.
