Council To Go To Law, To Secure Greater Safety At Crossings
Upon the special crossing committee's reporting its inability to make any headway in respect to bringing about safer conditions at the Ligonier Valley Railroad crossings, through amicable arrangements with the company, the Latrobe Borough Council decided, last night, to have recourse to law, in an endeavor to secure relief, and the solicitor was directed to institute action in the Court of Equity, designed to bring about the establishment of gates and a watchman, and also such other innovations as the court might be prevailed upon to direct, in the interests of safety and public convenience.
The matter was brought to the front when Councilman Shaffer, the chairman of the special committee, asked that he be excused from further duty, professing his failure to get the company to do anything.
It was declared that the conditions were but little improved, if any; that cars were being allowed to stand close to the crossings; that the crossings were being kept blocked, at times, by trains, for extensive periods; and that the danger to pedestrians, especially to school children, continued grave.
One instance was recited of a child snatched from in front of a moving car, about a week ago.
It was declared that nothing had come from the conferences held with the superintendent, other than propositions, and so, the chairman of the committee, said, he would like to be excused.
Councilman Fuller moved that the street committee and the solicitor be instructed to proceed by law, in an endeavor to have gates placed at the Depot, Main, Weldon and Spring street crossings, and that, if necessary, a policeman be placed at the Main street
crossing, delegated with the duty of arresting trainmen blocking the thoroughfare.
