Will Keep View At Crossings From Being Obstructed By Cars

In a "get-together" meeting, Mr. W. V. Hyland, general manager of the L.V.R.R., and a number of the borough officials threshed out the "crossing situation," last evening.

The conference was held right on the ground, and it proved to be of a character affording hope for some relief from the dangerous conditions now prevailing.

Mr. Hyland said, right at the start, that the company was ready to meet Latrobe half way on any proposition, and he declared that he would be found ready to do everything within his power to lessen the danger which he said he well knew existed.

The suggestion that the scales be moved to a place farther out the tracks was first made, but Mr. Hyland seemed to think that that was impracticable, and he pointed out that the greater part of the shifting done over the crossings was not due to the weighing of cars, but to the making up of trains, east and west bound.

The matter of keeping cars away from the crossings, so as to afford drivers and pedestrians a chance to see better, was next considered, and the railroad official said he was heartily in favor of it. He proposed that "cutting posts" be erected 75 feet on either side of every crossing, between which it would be against the rule of the company to allow cars to stand, and he also suggested that it might be possible to keep standing cars out of the squares between Main and Spring streets, altogether. The borough officials said that a plan of that kind would be of great help.

As to a subway, built especially for school children, Mr. Hyland asked if the council would build it, providing the company would appropriate $2,000 toward it?

This proposition will be laid before council, at the next meeting.

The opinion seemed to be that the subway should be at least eight feet wide and that it should be put in at Spring street. An engineer's estimate on a six-foot subway, made some time ago was $1,800.

Mr. Hyland declared that he would have a meeting with the Pennsylvania supervisor at the earliest opportunity, and he said he was sure that the latter's hearty support would be forthcoming for any rules which might be adopted as to "cutting" limits.

How best to repair the Main street crossing was considered. Finally Mr. Hyland asked the borough officials to let him repair it as he thought best, and that if it wasn't satisfactory, he would have the work torn out again and repaired a different way. This was agreed to.

The representatives of the borough present were Councilmen Shaffer, Fuller and Slater, composing the special committee on crossings, Burgess H. O. Benford, H. H. Smith, the president of council; and the solicitor.
