Ligonier Wreck Cases Suddenly Come To An End
Physician Gets Verdict of $9,000 Settlement Reached in Other Suits.
There was a sudden termination of all the cased instituted against the Ligonier Valley Railroad Company by alleged victims of the famous Wilpen wreck, after a verdict had been rendered in the case of Dr. J. B. Johnston.
The Ligonier physician entered suit against the railroad company to recover $30,000 for alleged permanent injuries, and after two days' trail the jury rendered a verdict Wednesday morning allowing the plaintiff $9,000. The verdict was said to be satisfactory to the plaintiff. It was emphatically denied that Dr. Johnston had been tendered more than $10,000 by the railroad corporation in lieu of settlement. No offer of a settlement had been made.
Following the verdict in the Dr. Johnston case a settlement was reached in the damage
case instituted by Myrtle Ankney, whose husband, a fireman on the freight train, had been killed in the wreck. The widow is to be paid the sum of $6,500. The settlement was conducted by Attorneys Jos. A. McCurdy and Alex McConnell. Another case was that of Bessie Hoon, who claimed damages for the death of her father. A settlement was reached by the payment of $2,800 to the plaintiff. Non-suits were entered in the cases of W. Miles Tosh and Karl R. Eicher. Neither the plaintiffs nor the attorneys in the cases appeared, and Judge A. D. McConnell ordered judgment in non-suit to be entered.
