New Manager Gets Write-Up In Dispatch
The Pittsburgh Dispatch, yesterday, contained the following complimentary article concerning the L.V.R.R.'s new general manager, W. V. Highland:
The brief official announcement early last week that William V. Hyland becomes
manager of the old Ligonier Valley Railroad, one of the most noted of the smaller roads in Pennsylvania, and known for a quarter of a century as probably the "Pennsy's" best feeder, carries with it much meaning to his boyhood friends and bothers in the Western part of the State. To them all it indicates that the door of opportunity is just as far ajar these days as it ever was in this land of opportunity.
William V. Hyland not only grasped the chances before they were able to get by him, but he made practically all of them. With the official announcement that the young Braddock man becomes head of one of the most valuable short carrying systems in the State, comes also the announcement that he will leave the scene of most of his activities in recent years, in fact, since he left childhood's years behind. He will sever his
connection with North Braddock Borough Council probably at the May session, the first Tuesday in May, and will make his permanent residence in Ligonier, that he may be in close touch with the operations of the Ligonier Valley Railroad.

He entered the employ of the Keystone Bridge Company as a clerk, after leaving Douglass Business College, about 1899, and in 1901 he became shop clerk at the Rankin plant of the McClintoc-Marshall Construction Company, which job he held for a year. He rose the following year to the position of storekeeper at the plant, and the next year was promoted to the office of assistant purchasing agent for the plant, which he held for five years. He then was promoted to the position of claim adjuster for the McClintoc-Marshall Construction Company, four years ago, which he held until last October, when he resigned to become claim agent for the Ligonier Valley Railroad, which position he held until he temporarily succeeded to the office held for the past 30 years by George Senft, the general manager of the Ligonier Valley Railroad.
General Manager Senft asked for a leave of absence from his duties early in January, at the annual meeting of the board of directors, stating that ill-health and his long term of service brought him such consideration for an extended period, and possible retirement. The board of directors granted his request, and Manager Senft left for southern California the end of January, with his wife and family. The young claim agent was placed in acting charge of the road, and when Mr. Senft presented his resignation a week or two ago, it was accepted, and Mr. Hyland virtually becomes general manager in his stead. He is one of the youngest railroad managers in the country.
