More Coke Ovens For This Section
The Marietta-Connellsville Coal & Coke Co. which has a plant north of town recently secured by purchase from Judge Steel coal tract north of Ligonier 134 acres of coal land near the St. Clair Coal Co. works and work has already been commenced on the building of coke ovens. The investment, it is said, involves approximately $250,000. The plant will be connected with the Wilpen branch of the Ligonier Valley railroad and about 80 ovens will be rushed to completion and in the meantime an opening of the mines will be made. The coal is drift coal and easy to be mined, as it will be self drained which will make it very cheap to operate.
The Connellsville Courier says the price paid for the property averaged over $1,100 per acre, making the coal stand the company about $150,000. A year ago it could have been purchased at less than $450. The discovery that Connellsville coal was getting very scarce induced the owners to mark up the price.
