Deer Got On the Railroad, Engine Stops

Had it not been for the watchful eye of Engineer Byers, of the P. W. and S. passenger train, the herd of deer in the laurel hill game reserve would be two less in number today, the man at the throttle having put on the brakes and having brought the train to a stop, last night, just in time to avoid running over two of the fleet-footed creatures which had wandered out upon the track, and which, apparently, had become dazed by the light of the locomotive.

Dr. G. A. Ulrich, of Ligonier, the Game protector whos in charge of the preserve located along the P. W. and S., reports that everything is in fine condition, and that the animals and birds are getting along in splendid style. No trouble has been experience, from illegal hunters, while the big preserve has been entirely free from forest fires. The frosts have helped turn the leaves to their autumn tints, and the preserve now presents a very attractive appearance. Dr. Ulrich says that there are some chestnuts on the mountain, but not as many as the blossoms had led one to believe would be grown.
