Work on the new and grand railroad station at Ligonier which is being built this year by the Ligonier Valley Railroad company was commenced last week and the completion of
the foundation is only a matter of a short time. We were shown the plans of station Monday by General Manager George Senft. The design is certainly a very pretty one, something new and unique in the construction of railroad stations. It will be a building of which our town can well be proud and shows the progressive spirit of the management of Ligonier Valley Railroad company in placing a station at Ligonier, large, beautiful, modern and convenient.
The building will be two stories high with a cement cellar large enough for the furnace for heating purposes, with a flat roof and it will be heated by steam or hot water system. The building will be fire proof throughout, having very little wood about it. It will be built of granite and granite terra cotta which will make it strong and substantial and give it a beautiful appearance. The building will be 95 feet in length facing the railroad on one side and the Main street of the town on the other side. The width of building looking
toward the east and the town will be 34 feet. The station is being placed about the center of the railroad grounds south of Main street and when completed will be surrounded by beautiful lawns artistically arranged, adding beauty to the place. The first floor will be on a level with the street grade so that you can walk in without a step up from either entrance. The floors will be of tiling. On the first floor there will be ticket office, package room, baggage room, ladies' waiting room, gentlemen's waiting room, general
waiting room with wash and toilet rooms. The center of the building with the main entrances facing the main street and the railroad will be set back four feet, adding to the general exterior appearance.
The second story will be used for railroad offices and will be equipped in the most convenient and modern manner. The roof will be surrounded by a baluster which will give a more beautiful appearance to the entire building. When the station building is
once completed we know that everybody will agree that it is one of the most complete and beautiful railroad stations to be found in any town in Pennsylvania.
The building of such a station for Ligonier shows the progress, enterprise and foresight of the owners of the road. Ligonier is bound to grow and improve and the building of the station is a step in the right direction and will receive the approval and commendation of Ligonier valley people and of the strangers who every day visit our beautiful and historic town and valley. Improvement is the right spirit of railroad progress and activity and the building of the station will be a mutual benefit. We are glad to see the good work of improvement go on, in all directions.
