Byers-Allen Company Winding Up Their Territory in the Vicinity of Ligonier

Somerset, Pa., Dec. 23. - A report states that one of the greatest of Ligoniers industries is nearing an end. This is the vast lumbering business which for years has been conducted by the Byers-Allen Lumber Company. Thousands of acres of fine timber have been cut and the logs sawed into lumber and marketed during the past several years, and now it is stated that the resources of the tracts have been exhausted and that the Byers-Allen Company are preparing to remove their plants and men to virgin tracts of timber.
Large mills occupy acres of land in the eastern end of Ligonier borough and probably a thousand men reside in Ligonier and swell the population of that town who are in the employ of this great lumber company.
The land which has been lumbered by the Byers-Allen Lumber Company extends for miles along the line of the Pittsburg, Westmoreland & Somerset railroad and includes the famous Laurel Hills. This country is famous as one of the wildest and most primitive sections in the thickly populated sections of Western Pennsylvania
