Street Committee Gives L. V. R. R. Two More Weeks
At a meeting of the street committee of the borough council, held at the City Hall, last evening, the matter of the crossings over the L. V. R. R. at Weldon and Spring Streets was taken up, and after a discussion of the case, notice was sent to General Manager George Senft, of the railroad company , to the effect that if the crossings are not constructed within two weeks, dating from today, the borough will at once proceed to Construct them at the expense of the company. The same action was taken relative to the needed repairs of Derry street, and if the Westmoreland Street Railway Company fails to get busy within the allotted time, the borough authorities will. The street committee means business and these notices are positively the last that will be sent.
The street committee decided to grant, two new arc lights, petitioned for by the employees of the Railway Steel Spring Company. One will be located at the corner of Jefferson and Gertrude streets and the other at the corner of Gertrude and Virginia streets. The arcs will be put up at once and will be a big convenience, especially for the men who go to work at midnight.
The committee decided to raise the pay of the members of the street commissioners force from $1.60 to $1.80 per day, and the new rate will go into effect at once.
