Wilpen Coal Works Will Soon Boom
Preparations For Building Of More Ovens, Houses and Equipments
A Steel Tipple To Be Erected
Four Hundred Thousand Dollars To Be Spent By The Shenango Furnace Co. At Their Wilpen Works In Ligonier Township The Coming Summer Which Means A Mighty Improvement And Business Activity In Ligonier Valley
Very decided progress and improvements will be made at the Wilpen coke works in Ligonier township the following summer. Thos. W. Keighley, the general superintendent, was at Pittsburgh recently conferring with the officers of the Shenango
Furnace Co., the owners of this extensive works, looking forward to make vast
improvements in the amount of output for the coming summer. At last 400 ovens will be in operation as soon as they can be built and new modern steel coal tipple will be erected and at least $400,000 expended in perfecting the plant for making coke. This is the largest coke works in Ligonier valley and will employ a large number of men and its pay roll will distribute a large sum of money in our valley every month. The result of all this means a town of some importance out at Wilpen and great business activity and improvements all around. Ligonier will feel the impetus of more business and progress along several lines of activity. Coal is king in this section as it has been in various parts of Westmoreland county for several years past.
We were shown a number of photographs taken out at Wilpen recently, that have the
appearance to indicate that extensive work has already been done in preparation for a large coke plant. Wilpen with other plants near by is making this one of the great coal and coke centers of Western Pennsylvania.
