Valley Improvements
Improvements are going right along out along the line of the extension of the Ligonier Valley railroad. The grading is nearly done out to the works of the Shenango furnace Co., at Wilpen. The trains now run as far as the crossing at the public road at the A. B. Clifford farm, and it is hoped that in two weeks trans will be running out to the coal works which will enable the company to ship the necessary material in the construction of the coke ovens and other improvements and work necessary in the establishment of a modern coke plant.
Quite recently two car loads of screenings from the McCance quarries were taken out to the Clifford crossing over the railroad and hauled with teams from there to the place where the Wilpen ovens are being built.
This extra labor will be obviated as soon as the railroad is extended to the plant and the work of building the 400 ovens of this plant will go forward much faster, enabling the company to get ready to ship coke and coal by next spring if not sooner.
Other works are being constructed along the line of this railroad extension, notably the Seger Bros. plant, on the Henry Kuhns farm, which joins the Lytle farm on which is the plant of the Shenango Furnace Co. They are getting ready as fast as possible to mine coal
and ship it whenever the railroad will be ready to handle the output. Then on the Eshelman farm, with the opening on the Tosh farm, which is owned by Connellsville capitalists, another coal plant will soon be opened. The above coal and coke plants, with others to follow, will make the former quietness of the Hannah's run district a regular hum of coal industries.
