Big Coal Sale Has Been Made
John M. McClure Sells His Farm For $75,000
A Big Coke Plant To Be Erected
Some Smaller Tracts Of Coal Adjoining Sold Making About 150 Acres Situated 7 Miles North Of Ligonier To Which The L.V.R.R. Extension Will Penetrate Will Be Operated By Fort Ligonier Coal Company
As first mentioned in the Echo last week the John M. McClure farm in Fairfield township was bought for $75,000, also some smaller adjoining tracts sold, making in all about 150 acres.
This coal field is situated seven miles north of Ligonier near the Shenango Furnace Company's operation, entrance being gained to this coal field by a purchase of a part of the above named firm's coal underlying the old Wells farm.
The surface of the old Wells farm now owned by Thomas McKelvey was disposed of by him for about $4,000, retaining all lower veins of coal, this farm having heretofore thought to be almost worthless proving to be the key to the above coal field.
This sale was brought around through the introduction of Mr. H. H. Patterson, a prominent attorney of Pittsburgh, Pa., by Mr. J. N. Crossland. These gentlemen were successful in selling to Mr. Jos. Head and Mr. James Peters, of Latrobe, and we understand this field will be operated by the Fort Ligonier Coal Co.
The Ligonier Valley railroad extension will be built to this field and this field of coal shipped and placed on the market via Ligonier. This will mean the building of many more coke ovens and the increase of coal business in Ligonier valley and a further financial benefit to this entire section.
