Coal Developments
New Coal Field To Be Opened In The Near Future

We had a talk last Saturday with Mr. Crossland, who represents extensive coal interests through leases obtained by him in Ligonier valley. Among others there are the Agnes Wells and McClure farms in Fairfield township, where the Pittsburgh vein of coal has been purchased and operations looking toward opening, mining and converting into coke products will soon be commenced. He said that within two weeks men would be at work opening up mines on one of these farms. Later coke ovens will be built and a coal plant erected which will employ several hundred men and make this one of the busy sections of the valley. The coal and coke will be shipped via Ligonier over the extension of the L.V.R.R. from Wilpen on up the Hannah's Run, turning to the left on the south side of the John Tallman farm.

The Freeport vein of coal which has been leased by the same parties, from Laughlintown down into Fairfield township will be tested soon, perhaps this fall yet, by putting down several test holes to obtain the necessary information in reference to the thickness and quality of the coal which, if found to be all right will be developed later. Ligonier valley prospects are getting brighter every month. The Echo desired to keep right in line with every project for the improvement of our valley in any respect.
