Another big deal of coal has been consummated in Ligonier valley within the last week. The purchase this time is by Connellsville capitalists. The deal is said to have been closed by Rockwell Marietta and Clair Stillwagon for the purchase of the Pollock, or
Eshelman farm, in Ligonier township, three miles north of Ligonier and adjoining lands with B. R. Robb. This farm has been bought, surface and coal for $33,000. It is also reported that an adjoining tract of coal has been purchased by the same parties. The Eshelman farm contains about twenty acres of coal, the remainder of the farm is good farm land of the limestone variety and has a good building erected thereon.
The purchase of the land and coal, the opening of the vein which will be a drift mine, the building of coke ovens and other necessary outlay, will involve an expenditure of probably $300,000. On this tract the opening will be made and 50 coke ovens will be
built as soon as possible and operations commenced as soon as the ovens are up. John M. White, of Ligonier, one of the best posted coal men of this section, will have charge of the construction of the works and operations will be pushed right along. The ovens will be along the line of the extension of the L.V.R.R. Co. and of course the shipments will be made over this road, which is making ample preparations to handle all the increase of business and expects in the near future to put on a night crew and run a night train.
The new works will be operated under the name of the Marietta-Connellsville Coal and
Coke Company, which will have a capital stock of $100,000. A charter for the company has been applied for. Rockwell Marietta is to be president and Clair Stillwagon secretary and treasurer. The two above names officers, with the following, will constitute the board of directors: W. L. Kelley, of Scottdale; Elmer Welsh, of Ruffsdale, and William Marietta, of Connellsville.
Ligonier valley is on the verge of a mighty wave of industry and financial progress that will sweep over this section soon and bring to market our many resources and enrich our people.
