It was our pleasure the last week to pay a visit to Wilpen, the new town at the new coal works of the Shenango furnace Company, on the Lytle Farm, four miles north of town. We were surprised at the amount of preliminary work that has been done preparatory to
opening up the mines and starting the coke ovens. Driving out to the Lytle School house, where we taught our second term of school many years ago we discovered that the place has undergone a wonderful transformation. New store houses are building, new dwellings, an office building for the Superintendent of the company, and grading for the railroad and stonework preparatory to the building of the coke ovens have made a wonderful change in the quiet country home-like valley of Hannah's Run. About a half-mile of stone wall several feet high extending along the hillside on which when completed the coke ovens will be built. Three openings have been started and driven in some distance. Preparation is being made for the building of coal tipples, and as soon as the extension to the L.V.R.R. has been completed so that material can be shipped out by railroad the work will progress much faster and the oven will be built. We are informed that 100 ovens will be built this fall and 300 more next spring. This will require the employment of about unreadable This will mean a population of more than ?,000 people when these works are once properly in operation.
The opening up of this coal territory requires the extension of the L.V.R.R. to the mines and this work is now being rapidly pushed forward. The grading is almost completed as far as to the A. B. Clifford farm, and ties and rails are down part of the way. The road leaves the line of the road to the Old Colony Coal and Coke works at North Ligonier,
passes through the Hermitage golf grounds and just north of the Morningside race course and up the Hannah's Run to the Lytle farm, where the Shenango Furnace Co. works, at Wilpen, are located. This will be a great Ligonier Valley industry soon to be followed by others.
