Newspaper Reports Have Made Another Annual Sale Of The Ligonier Valley Railroad Newspaper Roads Have Been Built Or Are Soon To Be Built The Wabash, The Pennsylvania And Other Roads Reported Coming
The signs of business activity and prosperity are evidenced by the building of railroads.
No country can be developed without railroads as they are the very arteries of commerce that reach out and tap the veins of industry. If half the reported railroads for out Ligonier valley are built we will be placed in the center of a great railroad system deviating in all directions and opening up our products and putting us in double touch with all the great business centers of the world. The Pennsylvania Railroad Co. has been reported to have bought the L.V.R.R. every spring for the past eight years or more and the Pennsylvania
continued down through our valley to touch the main line of this road either at Bolivar or New Florence. This is an old story and the other one is that the Pennsylvania would run a road independent of the L.V.R.R. this would make two roads. We now have the P. W. & S. to Somerset which will soon be completed and connecting with the L.V.R.R. will give a direct road from Somerset through Ligonier and Latrobe to Pittsburgh. This will save the Somerset people about 40 miles in reaching Pittsburgh and a day's time.
The other newspaper roads are the recently reported Wabash coming from Pittsburgh via Irwin, Jeannette and Youngwood, buying the L.V.R.R. and the P. W. & S., going to
Somerset and connecting with the Western Maryland. Then we have the Westmoreland Central to be built from Bolivar through Ligonier or up the valley to cross over to Connellsville. More recently we have the report of a road up the Indian Creek and down the Loyalhanna to Ligonier. Still another report would have a road go up the P. W. & S. from Ligonier to top of the mountain and then to the south and down Indian Creek. Possibly there may be other reported railroads to our town that we cannot recall at present. Then there is to be a trolley line, so says rumor, from Latrobe to Ligonier for which a charter has been granted. Possibly the last reported railroad now effecting us is that published in the Greensburg Press of last Monday.
The Pennsylvania Railroad is making every effort to keep both the Ligonier Valley and the Pittsburg, Westmoreland & Somerset railroads out of the hands of the Western
Maryland, not that the Pennsylvania wants another line into that territory but it does not want Gould to get a line into Pennsylvania territory.
Thus is appears that Cassatt and Gould have opened a new controversy and have
clashed in another of the series of big and little battles that have beset Gould's operations ever since he started to come east of Toledo.
Recently is has been rumored that Gould was endeavoring to get the Ligonier Valley, with which the Pittsburg, Westmoreland & Somerset connects, but, according to an authoritative source consulted Saturday, the Mellons have so far refused to sell, intimating that they did not want to dispose of the road. Such reluctance, however, might well be accounted for unless the figure they have set upon the road was offered by the Western Maryland.
This is a brief outline of the reports of railroad to be built in Ligonier Valley that have been authoritively reported to many of the newspapers of Western Pennsylvania. We publish it that our readers may be able to learn of the many railroad projects that are being circulated in various quarters.
