Leasing Coal Territory
A Test Of Coal To Be Made In Ten Places
Mr. Crossland and D. M. Menoher have been out securing coal territory extending from New Florence up along the western base of the Laurel Hill Mountains to the vicinity of Laughlinstown in Ligonier township. As mentioned in the Echo last week the lower vein of coal is the one being secured. This coal is said to be the best steam coal in the country, containing a large percentage of carbon very little foreign matter and makes very little ashes and is an excellent ocean steamship coal. If the coal proves to be up to the test required it will likely be developed in the near future. The vein is about 3 feet in thickness and has been tested by local people, having been opened two or three places
along the mountain streams where it crops out.
The Morristown Coal company, consisting of eastern capitalists, are the people who are after this coal. We are also informed that ten tests of this coal will be made at different points from New Florence to Laughlinstown by making core drills of test holes to determine the thickness and character of the coal which if it proves to be all right will be taken up and operated in the near future.
