Railroad Secures Ground At Somerset
Eighteen Acres Secured For Depot And Sidings
The P. W. & S. At Somerset
The Company Accepts The Option On Jacob S. Picking Tract The Location Of Passenger And Freight Depots Determined The Borough Authorities Having Granted Franchise Giving Certain Rights-Of-Way Work On This New Railroad Will Soon Connect Ligonier and Somerset
The Somerset Standard has the following to say about the progress of the work on the P. W. & S. railroad which will connect that town with Ligonier in the near future, the work on which is progressing rapidly:
"Jacob S. Picking, of Somerset, who gave an option to the promoters of the Pittsburg, Westmoreland & Somerset railroad some weeks ago, on eighteen acres of land immediately north of the borough limits, has been notified that the company will accept the property, and the company's attorney, E. O. Kooser, is preparing a deed for the same.
"The location of the freight and the passenger depot of the new railroad, that is now almost within sight of the borough, is therefore determined. When the company's agents secured rights-of-way leading into the borough of Somerset some months ago they secured an option on the James B. Saylor site in this borough, which adjoins the Somerset & Cambria branch, where it was announced the depot would be established. The borough authorities also granted a franchise to the railroad company giving it the right to cross the Stoystown pike with its tracks.
"The site selected on the Picking property is an ideal location for a depot. There are eighteen acres included in the tract, which will give ample room for sidings, etc. A tract of land belonging to James McKelvey separates the Picking land from the S. & C. branch, and the P. W. & S. company has been negotiating with Mr. McKelvy for the purpose of reaching the S. & C. through this tract.
