Fatal Explosion
It Occurred at the Loyalhanna Pumping Shaft on Ligonier Valley Railroad
Low Water was the Cause
Latrobe, December 24. - By a terrific explosion occurring at the Loyalhanna pumping shaft, of the Loyalhanna Coal and Coke company at Oakville Station on the Ligonier Valley railroad, two miles south of Latrobe, this afternoon, one man was fatally injured and several others seriously injured. Fireman John Weaver was blown high in the air and fatally injured; William Peters and Joseph Gontz were terribly scalded and cut by flying fragments. The battery contained four boilers, three being old. The boiler house was entirely demolished and the tipple thrown down. One boiler was blown into the woods a distance of fifty feet. The explosion was caused by low water. The injured men live near Oakville.
