The Fourth at Idlewild
"It rained forty days, it rained forty nights. And it rained on the other side of Jordan" Great and glorious! Magnanimous and boundless pleasures! Last year's greatness put to shame! The nation's birthday was celebrated in a manner grand enough to enliven monarchs. Scores of people came flocking to the park like the spokes in the hub of a bicycle wheel. Train load after train load rolled in and swelled the crowd to almost countless numbers. Every person seemed filled with the spirit of the day and some few were filled with the spirit of brandy. Cupid was as merry as a thunder-storm in the night, and about as busy as the conductors who cared for the mass of traveling humanity. The day was a day of sunshine and everyone was as civil as an orange, with the exception of a few who had drank themselves drunk to the health of every Revolutionary hero. The Church of the Holy Family, Latrobe, conducted the picnic and it was a success out and out. They had amply provided meals for 5,000 persons, and the meals were of a character which showed that the ladies had spared no pains to please the public. More . . .
