Arrangements for Picnicking
The Rates to Idlewild So Reduced as to Make it Available For the Poor of Pittsburg
The adage that corporations have no souls is being disputed by the action of the Ligonier Valley Railroad Company which by persistent efforts has finally succeeded in obtaining a remarkably low rate for churches and schools from Pittsburg to Idlewild and return for the coming summer. The rate fixed is only fifty cents for the round trip which places the beautiful and celebrated natural mountain parks almost at the doors of the poor of Pittsburg.
Heretofore it has been almost impossible for the churches and schools of Pittsburg, to picnic at this beautiful spot because of the number of poor members who were unable to pay the fare of one dollar.
The leaders of these institutions were unable to raise money to take these poor with them, although in a number of instances entertainments were held during the past winter for this purpose, and as they did not feel disposed to leave them at home, some other, and more convenient grounds were secured and a day in the wood with natures refreshing touch visible on every side, was not given to those people whose lives are spent in the hot and dusty streets of a big city.
It is truly fortunate that a low rate has been secured. The Superintendent, Mr. Senft, desired to make Idlewild a popular place for the picnics of churches and schools and to this end has labored hard to have low rates made.
Idlewild will this year be more beautiful than ever and though improvements are being made here and there, the hand of the workmen is never raised to despoil the forests of their natural beauty. It is still a wild, beautiful mountain retreat the equal of which will indeed be hard to find. The rates this year, for parties of 200 or over will be from Greensburg, 40 cents, all other points west, to and including Pittsburg, 50 cents.
