State Condemns Area For Road
Washington, Dec. 3 (U.P)
The Ligonier Valley Railroad asked the Interstate Commerce Commission today for authority to abandon its property between Latrobe and Fort Palmer, Pa. The company said the state of Pennsylvania recently condemned for highway purposes
four segments of track totaling more than four miles between Latrobe and Ligonier.
It added that it intends to sell more than three miles of line within the Latrobe switching limits to the Pennsylvania Railroad. The company said it has been operating at a loss for five years.
According to Harold A. Stewart, solicitor for the Latrobe Borough Water Authority, construction of the new stretch of the Lincoln Highway on the present right-of-way of the Ligonier Valley Railroad east of Kingston will involve moving of 1,200 feet of the water line. Mr. Stewart said several meetings have been held with the State Highway Department with the object of arriving at a satisfactory settlement.
Relaying of the affected portion of the water line will be done at the expense of the Highway Department, he disclosed. Mr. Stewart added that abandonment of the Ligonier Valley Railroad as requested today, will require a minimum of six months. He intimated that it may take considerably longer.
Borough officials have been contemplating this move on the part of the Ligonier Valley Railroad for some time, it was learned today.J. P. Ambler, district highway engineer, could not be contacted at a late hour for additional information concerning the proposal.
