Strikes In Progress At Three Ligonier Valley Coal Mines

Strikes were in progress yesterday at three Ligonier Valley mines.

Monday, miners at the Marietta Works of the Barnett Coal Company, went on strike, following the lead of the miners at the Shenango Works plant of the Baton Coal Company, at Wilpen, who quit last week.

The miners are demanding a scale to weight coal, their own weighmaster and recognition of the United Mine Workers of America, they said.

The pit mouth at the Marietta works was boarded up Monday, and the Miners' Supply store there was moved to Millwood.

The pit mouth at the Baton Coal Company mine had previously been boarded.

About 500 miners from the different valley mines attended a meeting held in a field near Wilpen Monday, at which they listened to talks by George Mechick, and Michael Nelson, organizers for the United Mine Workers.

The striking miners from the Baton coal plant elected officers at the meeting as follows: John Kislan, president; John Zurich, vice president; Joseph Hoza, recording secretary; Andy Banas, corresponding secretary; and Mike Matrunick, treasurer.

The Ft. Palmer mine was also represented at the meeting, but they want to organize a separate chapter of the United Mine Workers, and any action they take will be individual.

Several hundred miners were employed at the mines affected.
