FIRST L.V.R.R. TRAIN HAULED FIVE PASSENGERS
R. B. Mellon Was the Conductor

The articles appearing in the Bulletin within the past few days, referring to the fiftieth anniversary of the inauguration of service over the L. V. R. R., have attracted wide interest locally and in the Valley, but no one has been more interested than Mr. R. B. Mellon, of Pittsburgh, one of the owners of the road, and the head of the great Mellon interests.

Mr. Mellon was the conductor on the first train which was run over the railroad following the completion of the road about the first of November, 1877.

The records show that the road, then a narrow gauge was opened for business on November fifth. The first train was run from Latrobe to Ligonier and the first fare collected was 35 cents, paid by a passenger to travel to Darlington Station, at the foot of Four Mile Run.

Mr. Mellon writes: "I was the conductor, Sam French the engineer, and Charley Kuhn was the brakeman. Four other passengers were on the train that went to Ligonier, fare 50 cents each. The road had a platform and track at Alexandria street, across from the Pennsylvania Railroad's water tank."
