Motor-Propelled Passenger Coach Being Demonstrated On L.V.R.R.
Company Is Planning To Expand Its Passenger Service Between Latrobe And Ligonier
The Ligonier Valley Railroad Company is contemplating an increase of its passenger service between Ligonier and Latrobe. It is in connection with the possibility of a more frequent service, that a gasoline-propelled combination passenger-baggage coach is now being demonstrated on the railroad, the demonstration being conducted by the manufacturer of the coach in question.
The coach which may be driven either by gasoline or electric power, was brought from the east, yesterday, on a flat car, and was unloaded at Ligonier.
It was immediately placed on the tracks and during the day it made several trips between Ligonier and Latrobe, its best time being 29 minutes.
The coach is about the size of a small street car, and is equipped to carry baggage as well as passengers. The railroad company officials made plain that the coach was being operated simply to demonstrate it, and that no purchase had been made.
It is understood that it will be demonstrated for several days, making trips between the running time of the regular train.
Railroad officials said that nothing definite had been decided upon, but indicated that the company was really contemplating an expansion of its passenger service.
It is considered possible that other makes of motor propelled coaches may be tried out, on the road, and it is understood that the company will go into the question thoroughly, before arriving at a decision as to what to do, in increasing the service.
The coach now being demonstrated is from the J. G. Brill factories in Philadelphia. It is of the model M-50, and has seating accommodations for 44 passengers.
This afternoon the coach made a trip from the Ligonier station to the Latrobe station in 24.5 minutes. It attracted a lot of attention all along the line as well as after it pulled into the local station. The coach is painted red and is quite attractive in appearance.
