Drilling For Gas At Longbridge
Drilling nearly a mile and a half through the earth's crust into the heated sub-strata, gas men have made unsuccessful efforts at Long Bridge near here, to strike wells with which to replenish the steadily dwindling supply of gas in this district. Drilling crews of the People's Natural Gas company of Pittsburgh have penetrated nearly 7,000 feet without results.
The Long Bridge operation is the deepest hole in the world that has been drilled for gas. The geologists of the company insist that gas will be reached after several more feet have been passed by the drillers.
The drilling has been in progress four years. The 7,000 foot mark was passed on the fourth birthday of the operation. More than 114 tons of casing, with which the well is lined, have been run in. So far however, not a single foot of gas has been produced.
