Concrete Girders Placed for Railroad Bridge
Four huge slabs of concrete, two of them weighing 90 tons each, and the others slightly less, were placed Sunday, at Millbank, to make a new bridge for the L.V.R.R. at that point. The slabs were about 36 feet long and about 7 feet, 10 inches in width.
Two wreck train derricks from Derry and Youngwood did the "heavy" work of the day. The huge slabs had been made on the ground, and everything was in readiness. After the first passenger train had gone up, the derricks started to lift the first slab.
The work took all day. An extra passenger train was left on the Latrobe side of the bridge, and on the afternoon trip passengers were transferred around the open bridge, a train having run from Ligonier to Millbank and the train on the Latrobe side having
picked up the passengers and the baggage and took them to Latrobe. The track was relaid over the new bridge, and everything was ready for traffic Monday morning.
