Viaduct To Be Built At McCance

Harrisburg, Pa., June 2. The construction of an 800 foot concrete and steel viaduct over the tracks of the Ligonier Valley Railroad and the Loyalhanna Creek, on the Lincoln Highway at McCance, 4 miles west of Ligonier, was ordered today by the Public Service Commission.

The new structure will replace a dangerous grade crossing which crosses the railroad track at an angle of 45 degrees and a three span pony truss which is so narrow that it permits only one way travel.

In order to effect the elimination of the grade crossing the present Lincoln Highway will be relocated about 3200 feet south, which will permit a bridge with but a slight grade and approaches. It is estimated that the new structure will cost $159,108.90. The land upon which the highway is to be relocated has been donated by the owners, Seger Bros., and Booth & Flynn.

The work is to be done by the State Highway Department while the Department and the Latrobe Water Company are to reach an agreement relative to the relaying of about 900 feet of water mains. The L.V.R.R. is assessed $50,000, Westmoreland county $43,000 and any land damages that may occur, Ligonier township $3,000 and the Public Service Commission appropriates $13,000. The railroad company is to maintain the bridge over its right of way, and the Westmoreland county authorities are to maintain the portion over the Loyalhanna Creek. The road is to be 24 feet wide with a clearance of 22 feet over the railroad tracks.
