L. V. R. R. To Propose Substitute Structure
Railroad Has Plans For Bridge At Blue Rock,Claimed To Be More Efficient
Hearing Set For Thursday
A substitute bridge for the extensive structure planned by the State Highway Department to span Loyalhanna creek and the Ligonier Valley railroad tracks at Longbridge, will be advocated Thursday morning at the scheduled hearing before the Public Service Commission in Pittsburgh, by officials of the Ligonier Valley railroad, it was learned today.
The bridge being planned by the railroad will be much shorter than that proposed by the State Highway Department, but will be more efficient than the State bridge, it is claimed. Ligonier Valley officials worked out their plans for the structure some time ago, it is understood, and feel that they have developed the logical bridge to remove the present grade crossing and to alleviate the situation which exists at McCance at the present time.
Less time would be required to construct the bridge suggested by the railroad and this is regarded as an important factor in the undertaking. In addition, the bridge could be constructed at less cost than the bridge planned by the Highway Department, which will cost approximately $250,000.
Both of the proposed bridges provide a roadway for two automobiles, with a sidewalk for pedestrians. The railroads bridge would be built a short distance to the east of the Highway Departments bridge. It would not have a curve at the east end, but would have a slight curve at the west end.
At the hearing before the Public Service Commission Thursday morning, it is expected that if one of the two proposed structures is approved, the cost will likely be apportioned among the state, county and railroad.
