Highway Department Wants Overhead Crossing At McCance

That the State Highway Department entertains the idea of a new bridge over the Loyalhanna at Blue Rock a bridge that not only will be a two-way structure across the stream, but that also would be extended to form an overhead passage across the L.V.R.R. track is to be inferred from the fact that the department has filed a formal complaint with the Public Service Commission asking for the elimination of the grade crossing over the L.V.R.R. track at the place mentioned.

Two weeks ago, the State Highway Department placed an observer at the bridge, and for four days he kept count of the motor vehicles that passed over the bridge and the grade crossing adjoining it.

At the time, it was assumed that the department was seeking data merely as to the need of a wider bridge, but its action in moving against the grade crossing is reported to be in conjunction with a plan to build a bridge that would cross both the stream and the railroad track.

It is understood that the department's engineers have figured out a plan where, by changing the location slightly to take advantage of a little different grade, the bridge could be built with but comparatively little additional grading being entailed.

The action of the department in asking the Public Service to abolish the grade crossing is thought to be a move to put the department in a position whereby it could call on the railroad company to bear a part of the cost.

The grade crossing is located near a sharp curve in the tracks.

Upon days when the railroad company runs additional trains, it has been customary for the company, for several years past, to place a watchman at the crossing. Few accidents have occurred there.

It is not known whether the complaint filed with the commission is a formal step in connection with friendly understanding between the highway department and the railroad company, or is the opening step in a contest. Latrobe Bulletin
