President Of Shenango Companies
William Penn Snyder, a prominent business man of Pittsburgh, died Feb. 3rd after an illness of two weeks. Mr. Snyder was born in Hollidaysburg in 1861, son of Rev. E. B. Snyder, a Methodist minister.
Mr. Snyder had been closely affiliated with the industrial and financial life of Greater Pittsburgh for many years, being also president of the Shenango Steamship and Transportation Company, the Antoine Ore Company, the Shenango Furnace Company
and the Shenango Steamship Company. He was a director of the Union Trust, Pittsburgh Trust, Terminal Trust and other companies.
He began work as an office boy and in 1880 started in the iron business and his business ventures have always been marked with success. When the Shenango Furnace Co. purchased coal territory in Ligonier valley in 1906 and started coal and coke works which has been quite prosperous from the first, the town of Wilpen was named after the president, Will. Penn Snyder. In respect for his memory and in recognition of his death the works at Wilpen were closed from Friday to Monday. The funeral services of Mr. Snyder were held Saturday afternoon. He leaves his widow, a son, William Penn Snyder, Jr., of Sewickley and a daughter, Mrs. Drew, wife of Judge Drew.
