Short Line Roads Stay With Owners
Washington, Jan. 19. Short line railroads, learning officially from Director General McAdoos testimony today that they will not be taken into the national system, issued a statement attacking this policy.
T. F. Barrett, receiver for the Pittsburg, Westmoreland and Somerset railway, declared that the small roads directly reaching coal mines or forests are more essential that the larger systems.
He said the national system as proposed now would be run by men who have all been heads of trunk lines and who in the capacity have not treated the little fellows fairly.
It is a dangerous policy on the part of the government to allow a centralization of power in the hands of the trunk lines which will be used to the destruction of the short lines. Many large coal fields of Pennsylvania and West Virginia are reached exclusively by short lines.
