Embargo Placed on Freight Shipments Coming Over L.V.R.R.
The Ligonier Valley coal and coke plants and numerous industrial plants to the south of Latrobe, were hit by an embargo, this morning, when the Pennsylvania Railroad company issued orders declaring an embargo on all open and box car shipments from foreign connecting railroads, livestock, perishable freight, newsprint paper, government freight, and Pennsylvania Railroad freight being alone excepted.
The Ligonier Valley Railroad being a connecting line, it is affected by the embargo, and this morning, all shippers in the Valley were notified.
The embargo, in addition to affecting all industrial plants in the Ligonier Valley, hits the Unity-Connellsville Coke company, the paper mills, the brick plants, the Booth and Flinn quarries and other industries using the L. V. R. R.
All shipments made yesterday were received by the Pennsylvania, but no shipments, except those included in the exceptions were received, this morning.
The embargo may last for several days, it is said.
It has been made necessary by reason of the congestion of freight in the yards of the Pennsylvania Railroad company. The company is said to be simply swamped, and the necessity of getting the yards cleared of the accumulated cars is declared to be imperative.
How long it will take to bring this about, railroad officials did not say, this morning. One opinion was that it likely would require several days, and perhaps longer.
Shippers along the L. V. R R. scarcely could believe it, when the word came over the wire to them, that an embargo had been placed upon all shipments from the L. V. R. R., including coal and coke, bricks and paper.
The demand for all these products is so great, the shippers considered that they would be the last things affected by an embargo.
But the fact that coal and coke were included, was taken to indicate how serious the situation has become, upon the Pennsylvania.
The embargo is not expect3d to be complete, as affecting the L. V. R. R. coal shipments, as some of the coal will go to the Pennsylvania Railroad for its own use.
Several industries may be able to continue shipping, also, as some of their products are for government use.
