Railroad To Somerset Will Reopen Soon
About August 1, 1917, Passenger And Freight Train To Run
Advantage To Somerset People
The P. W. & S. railroad which had abandoned service was recently purchased by Pittsburgh and other capitalists and has been named the Cambria & Pittsburg railroad and work in putting the road in proper shape for traffic has begun. The repairs on the road are under the management of John C. Ewing, of Johnstown, who is now located at Ligonier. He stated that the work on the road is progressing very well though material and men are hard to secure. An engine is on the road on the Somerset end which is being put in proper shape for train service and another engine which has been bought is expected to arrive at Ligonier in a few days and work on replacing rails and other repairs will be started on the Ligonier end of the road. It is expected to have the road ready for travel and freight service about August 1st when passenger trains, it is stated, will run through from Somerset to Latrobe and return.
The reopening of this road will be a decided advantage to both Somerset and Ligonier people, giving direct communication between the towns and enabling people to make the trip from Somerset to Pittsburgh by a shorter route and in much less time, as at present much time is lost in waiting on trains by the longer route.
A coal field which this road will tap will be opened it is asserted which will afford plenty of freight business.
