Snow And Heavy Rain Causes High Waters

All sorts of weather has prevailed in this section the past week - sunshine, cloudy, calm, stormy, warm, cold, melting and freezing, snow and rain. Considerable amount of snow fell during the latter part of last week, especially on the mountain. On Sunday about 8 o'clock, the temperature being lowered it began to snow and continued snowing until noon when a still higher temperature caused by southern winds changed the snow into a rainfall about noon Sunday. It continued to rain all afternoon Sunday and Sunday night until about three o'clock when the temperature began to change to colder and it
stopped raining. About 9 o'clock Monday forenoon it began to get colder and an hour before noon began to snow again and stormed considerably all day Monday growing colder all the time until Monday night we had real winter temperature.
The melting of the snow, the falling of the rain and the rise in temperature caused the local streams to rise until about three o'clock Monday morning, it is said, the waters in the Loyalhanna were higher than for a number of years past. The ice on the Loyalhanna and its branches was broken up and carried off by the high waters.
The J. C. Myers ice pond near the L. V. R. R. station was flooded and covered pretty badly with creek ice, doing considerable damage. The ice on the pond remained intact. To remove the creek ice would be quite a job. The bridge of the coal tipple crossing the
Loyalhanna creek, of the South Ligonier Coal Co. was badly damaged and carried away by the on rushing flood of waters. This bridge covered a span of sixty feet and will have to be rebuilt before the tipple can be used for loading coal. In the meantime, coal is being hauled from track to the tipple near the mines in wagons to the Market street crossing and loaded on the cars.
Several other minor damages were caused. Many of the cellars in the low part of town were flooded, causing some damage and considerable inconvenience to the people. The low fields in the vicinity of the Young slaughter house across the bridge from the Musick flouring mill were covered with water and the ball field west of the state road-was covered with water Monday morning as also was the low ground along Mill Creek. This was the big winter flood that occasionally hits this section and which is likely to be repeated with next spring's flood when the final breaking up of winter comes.
