Miners On Strike At Shenango

The coal miners at the Shenango Furnace Company's works at Wilpen came out on a strike Saturday and up to yesterday had refused to go back to work. The probabilities are that the works will be shut down for some time, as there is very little demand for coal or coke at present.

The trouble as we understand it was that many of the miners were not properly filling the wagons and a number had been fined for it and paid their fines but the deficiency in loading the wagons was kept up. On Saturday morning the drivers were notified that for every wagon not filled they would be fined 25 cents. This stopped it at once and the miners came out on strike under the leadership of a few men. The company will evidently warn these men out of the company's houses, dismiss the men and later employ others and open up the works again.

The company has been very lenient with the men and frequently helped them in various ways during the scarcity of work and has taken a contract for coal at very low price to help the men along, but cannot tolerate short measurements in coal wagons. Every thing has been quiet and orderly up to present writing, Tuesday afternoon.
