Complaint Is Received About L. V. Crossing
The first complaint of a crossing blocking to be made at police headquarters for some time, was registered by a local resident, Saturday evening. He told Lieutenant Stahl that his auto had been held up for an hour at the Main street crossing about eight o'clock.
The gentleman making the complaint is believed to have exaggerated the length of time the crossing was blocked, a little, but numerous people who were forced to wait at the crossing, and nearby residents said that a freight train had remained uncut at the crossing for at least twenty minutes.
The freight was a Pennsylvania train, and pulled up on the Ligonier branch to cut out a car of coke. The train was cut at the Depot street and at the Spring St. crossings but the Main street crossing remained blocked and in a short time several machines and a number of people on foot had collected at the crossing.
Every one remained patient for a time, but after a while murmurs of complaint could be heard, and when the train started shifting back and forth, several times almost clearing the crossing, but not quite, the anger of those waiting was expressed by sarcastic yells,
honking horns and shrieking sirens.
Finally the trainmen finished cutting out the car, coupled up and freight puffed serenely out on the main line.
No one apparently had the forethought to take the number of the engine, but the police secured the number of the car that was cut out, which will enable them to fix the responsibility for the blockading.
