L.V.R.R. Tied Up By Broken Rail
Traffic on the Ligonier Valley Railroad was blocked for an hour, this morning, when a large Pennsy freight engine went off the track, breaking a rail in three pieces. The accident occurred at a crossover just east of the Alexandria street bridge and blocked both tracks of the Liggie.
The Ligonier train due at Latrobe at 7:30 this morning, was unable to pull into the local station and the passengers had to walk across the bridge. There was a scramble to catch the 7:35 train to Pittsburgh as there is only five minutes in which to make connections and the Pittsburgh train pulled in before half the passengers had even reached the bridge. The train waited, however, but many had visions of missing it which made them move on the double quick.
A wreck train from Derry was sent to Latrobe and lifted the freight engine until a new rail could be placed and it could be put on the track once more.
The rail that broke was an old one and would have been replaced with a new one today,
anyway.
